In addition to law and order and counter-insurgency duties and counter-insurgency, the CRPF has played a more significant role in India's general elections. This is particularly the case for the former state of Jammu and Kashmir, Bihar and in the North East, due to the presence of unrest and sometimes violent conflicts. The elections for the parliament of September 1999, the CRPF played a significant role as a security force. In recent times, CRPF contingents are also being deployed to UN missions.
